Why do we even have steering wheels anymore?

No really, technically we don’t need them. We could replace them with a joystick or a little knob, or even go back to a tiller. We could even make things like the turns lock to lock adjustable. Wouldn’t that be fun?

But then we won’t have something for Nicolas Cage to manhandle while driving a stolen Ferrari 355 in third gear.

I would like to see him ham up turning a knob instead though,

Steering wheels are optional.

wheels are waaaay more accurate than joysticks.

We’ll go to no controls at all before we lose the wheel.

In the 90s Saab had an experimental 9000 prototype with a more or less central D-handle protruding from the dashboard instead of a steering wheel. They would let journalists try it. It seems it was fairly easy for any person to adapt to the new system after just a few miles.

It had some “feel” engineered into it, I supppose with servomotors.

I am pretty sure I read an article about it in Car Magazine. The journalist may have been Richard Bremner.

Because you need something to grab while taking fast turns.
I’m also no fan of steer by wire. I’ve seen to many electrical problems on cars to ditch the steering column

I played video games in the 1980's. Given my success at that...there is no way in Hell that a joystick should be an OK way to control a car. A wheelchair? Yes. Car? No.

You really, really, really want a mechanical connection between the tie rods and the steering input device, and a lot of joystick and knob setups have no good way to get that connection. (Yes, I know, Infiniti has steer-by-wire... but if there’s a problem, it reverts to mechanical steering anyway.)

That said, there are some steering setups that could work nicely and improve cabin ergonomics and crash safety. Sidesticks come to mind, and it’s a layout that my recumbent tricycle uses with mechanical steering to great effect: (not my trike, but the same model)

Play Gran Turismo or Forza lately? The ability to go from dead center to full lock instantly as you have with a joystick doesn’t translate too well to a multi-ton vehicle traveling at non-trivial speeds. What you want with a car is the ability to make gradual rotation. Slow (compared to a joystick) transitions from one degree to another is necessary for all the fine control decisions you must make when driving a car. A Joystick, knob or other control device is not as good as a big wheel for this job.

Well, why don’t fighter jets have wheels then? Because now you have the opposite problem; a jet fighter has to make fast, large changes in direction. And unlike a car, there aren’t many obstacles in the way for the jet to hit. So a control device that will let the pilot immediately and super-quickly change direction right now is what you want. This is why they have joysticks. Note that as the plane gets bigger, that need for precision control and gradual instead of instant changes in direction returns, and the joystick starts morphing back into a wheel.

Saab tried that once. Because Saab.

Well, at least they could change the name to joywheel then.
